We all know that we should eat plenty of fruit and veg and limit the fatty foods, however what are the optimum foods for good health? Well you will probably hear about a new superfood every now and again, but here is a run down of some of the best foods you can choose on your shopping trip:
BlueBerries – These are one of the most popular super foods, the reason being that they are full of antioxidants which is responsible for giving them their deep purple colour. Antioxidants are excellent for the cardiovascular system because they help to protect the blood from oxygen damage, which could eventually lead to clogging of the arteries. There are so many more health benefits to blueberries such as health of the eye and balancing blood sugar levels. They are easily incorporated into a healthy breakfast and go beautifully with pancakes or muesli.
Sweet Potatoes – They may not taste quite as nice as the plain old potato, but they are so much better for you that you should try to incorporate them into your diet. Sweet potatoes contain a high level of beta-carotene, which the body converts into Vitamin A. It is excellent for the same health benefits as blueberries.
Broccoli – This is packed full of numerous vitamins. It is an anti-inflammatory and excellent for digestive health, in addition to having similar benefits to the two foods already mentioned. Broccoli retains most of it’s vitamin content if it is steam cooked for a short time. If you aren’t keen on the taste then try adding it to soups and blending.
Quinoa – We have all seen the adverts – “whole grain is good for the heart”. Well quinoa is a great source of whole grains as well as containing high levels of magnesium which has been shown to help migraines.
Salmon – Salmon is full of omega 3 fatty acids and a good source of protein. Unlike big juicy steaks, you are getting all the protein benefits without the fat content of red meat. Salmon is delicious baked in foil with a sauce of your choice.
